Day 2: Painted Desert

First, happy birthday to Riley, who is 12. I honestly did everything I could to make it a great day for her despite the 8 and half hour drive that was a core feature.

Fun fact, dog’s don’t get time zones and therefore we were up and out at 5:30am. Hoping to reset today and sleep until 6 tomorrow.

Heading out of Roswell, we once again found ourselves in a part of the world that allows you to photograph the cover of The Eagles’ Hotel California. Kinda cool, but not anywhere as pretty when it isn’t twilight.

Teddy O the Orange Utan managed to get this shot. We didn’t do any other road pics because soon after this we found ourselves in some really spectacular scenery and you just haven’t earned that.

Or, the road was a lot less “straight-ahead-for-miles-on-end” and we had to focus on staying on the road.

Teddy and I have been playing Cemetery, where you count horses on your side of the car. You get 5 points a horse and play until someone reaches 100. Twist: if you pass a cemetery on your side of the car, you lose all your points. So in case you care, I won 100-50 when I lucked out on a horse farm… we lost count and he agreed with what I’d call fairly bad grace that the round was mine.

Anyway, that’s how you pass 8.5 hours of driving through alternating “back of beyond” and “holy crap this is spectacular.” Riley wanted in but she wouldn’t commit to a side and also insisted that cows were a type of horse we needed to count them.

Long story short, we pulled into Moab and checked into the Element, a much swankier spot than our TownePlace last night. View of a big red wall of rock right off the parking lot. Cool. They served us wine and a nice flatbread on the patio, with water and treats for Riley.

So enjoy our arrival shots that I took to send to Maggie. Very tired. Cartoon Network and an early bedtime and tomorrow, off to Boise.
